QuickBooks Web Connector: Setup and Common Errors

Updated 10/20/2026. Checked against Intuit's help articles.

The QuickBooks Web Connector is the Windows program that lets an outside web application exchange data with QuickBooks Desktop. Each connected app gives you a small .QWC file; Web Connector uses it to know which app to talk to and how.

Set it up

  1. Get the .QWC file from the app’s provider. If you do not have one saved, ask the provider for it.
  2. Install Web Connector where the company file is saved. Intuit says it can only be installed where the file is stored locally.
  3. Add the app. In QuickBooks Desktop, open Manage Web Apps and choose Set up next to the app, or load the .QWC file into Web Connector.
  4. Set the app’s password before you run the first sync.

Common error codes

Code What it means and the fix
QBWC1007, 1008, 1009, 1022, 1023, 1024 Web Connector cannot reach QuickBooks. Restart QuickBooks, sign in to the company file and close other open windows.
QBWC1012 An error on the app vendor’s server. Only the vendor can fix it.
QBWC1016 No app is selected. Select the app, then Update Selected.
QBWC1030 The app has no password. Set one before syncing.
QBWC1039 Several causes; Intuit keeps a separate article for it.
QBWC1040 Wrong username or password. Re-enter the password from your app, or download the .QWC file again.
QBWC1048 The server certificate could not be verified. Remove the .QWC file and download it again.
QBWC1053 A window is open in the company file. Close it, end stray QuickBooks processes if you must, then retry.
QBWC1085 The QWCLOG.TXT log is damaged or missing. Rename it to QWCLOGOLD.TXT if an app is connected.
QBWC1088 The app is pointed at a different company file. Download the .QWC file again and replace the old one.

Many of these codes trace back to three things: QuickBooks not open in the right company file, a window left open, or an app password that changed. Check those first.
